Antique reclaimed encaustic floor tiles with matching border tiles (1879 tot 1894)

Description

These pattern floor tiles were made and stamped by Maufroid Frères & Soeur, a Belgian company. This company was established around 1879.

The golden star motif is a tile of their early days (1879 tot 1894). It has the serial number 25. In those days encaustic ceramic tiles often had simple patterns that consisted of rectangles, squares, circles and polygons.

This floor with matching half size border tiles has been reclaimed from a Bourgeois house near Ghent. The floor has an antique and pleasing patina. Some tiles have edge nibbles and groutable chips, this can be expected from a floor of more than 125 years old.

Possible applications

These tiles can easily be combined with other plane tiles for example in the toilet or laid as stone carpet framed in a larger area of other  tiles, parquet or cast floor. Since the floor is ceramic, the tiles can be laid outside.
